Priceline Hotels - Bidding Advice and Extra Savings

Here’s some useful bidding advice for using Priceline to name your own price and ways to save more when you make your next hotel reservation.

no one deals like we do!

1. Make smart bids.

First, check out Betterbidding.com. This website reports winning bids on various destinations and hotels. This will give you an idea of what kind of bids you should place yourself. Obviously, you will want to get a deal that is at as least as good as what other people have been getting. Your starting bid should be lower than the winning bids you see there.

Second, start bidding at a low price and increase your bid incrementally until it’s accepted. This strategy is actually a little more sophisticated than it may sound at first. You may already know that Priceline divides most major cities into multiple zones. Needless to say, some zones have better hotels than others. Priceline actually shows you which star levels are available in which zones. For example, a city may have 4-star hotels in its downtown area but nowhere else. You can take advantage of this information. Priceline allows customers to place repeated bids on the same destination if they add additional zones or star levels. Now, let’s say you want a 4-star hotel but your first bid was not accepted. Now, when you rebid, don’t make any changes to the star level. Simply add a zone that doesn’t have any 4-star hotels. Then increase your bid by a little. Keep adding more of those zones to get additional “free” rebids. This way you are pretty much guaranteed to get the best possible rate.

2. Sign up for Great Fun.

When you place a successful bid and receive your confirmation, you will usually see a referral offer to sign up for a free trial of Great Fun, a Trilegiant program that has partnered with Priceline.

The offer states that you will get 10% off your purchase, but when you click on the referral link, the offer you will see is actually for 15% off (up to a maximum purchase of $300). Plus, with this service, you get 5% off all your future Priceline purchases.

There’s no up-front cost. Regardless of whether or not you actually plan to keep your Great Fun membership beyond the trial period, you still get the 15% off.

3. Sign up for Shopper’s Advantage.

Once you have signed up for Great Fun, you are likely to get an offer from another Trilegiant program called Shopper’s Advantage. This time you’ll get a $20 American Express Gift Card if you sign up for the 1-month free trial.

Again, there’s no up-front cost to you. Whether or not you decide to continue the service after the trial, the gift card is yours to keep.
